"I guess it doesn't matter where you go, people will be people; dragons will be people but with bigger teeth." ~Amber Whitewest
In the world of Skaadom, humans live alongside dragons as two distinct equal races. But like any land on earth, the evil mists of power and pride cloud the minds of even the noblest of creatures.
Dragons exude both intelligence and raw strength; iron defense, and natural weaponry of many kinds. They are unimaginably tough to kill. But humans too share a strength, one that solidifies their right to rule alongside great beasts. Humans are dexterous, relentless, and always evolving; while dragons, despite their will, remain unchanged. Do not be fooled by formalities. When backs are turned, these two races continue to bare a grudge that has spanned the dawn of time.
At times when the world becomes too overwrought with injustice, we like to think back to one of the greatest examples of solidarity in our history: the fellowship of Solisdetlucharus and the human knight of the Arthurian Code.
Nearing the end of the 2nd Age, the hearts of men were set on little more than conquest, and in retaliation, dragons pursued with an unquenchable wrath. Solisdetlucharus, whom we will refer to as Sol, shared this bitterness over his slain kin, yet careless vengeance grieved him just as dearly. He was one of the few dragons that had taken an interest in the human codes of chivalry; the love letter of king Arthur and the knights of Avalon. Sol studied this code fiercely, and swore to live by it both in this life and the next.
When a former knight-turned-dragon slayer one day coerced Sol into combat, the two found themselves at a stalemate of equal strength and wit. It was then that Sol proposed not only a truce, but a pact. For the dragon and the knight both heralded the Arthurian code far above their own personal differences. And eventually what started out as common ground grew into a brotherhood.
During their wanderings, Sol and the knight traveled about the human camps, teaching those willing to listen, about the blessings of working alongside dragons; granted other dragons were as reasonable as Sol. Seeing was believing for many, while just as many recoiled at the thought. Every now and again a brazen old warrior or a hotheaded youth would dismiss the pair's words entirely, and go straight for the attack. The knight defended Sol instinctively, and when this act of loyalty caused men to spit "vekteth!" at the traitor, Sol shielded the knight in return.
Bright young sparks of Skaadom, I encourage you to consider each other; it takes so little to unite. Consider how easy it is for even a singular mutual passion to transcend scale and flesh. You mustn't be swayed by those that hearken back to a time when dragons reveled in the glory of might. Our world has always been better off since humility graced us through the Rifts, and in turn, we have taught man the art of reverence. Remember this story fondly and teach it to your kin. But then comes the greater task: become the story; each one of you. So that the greatest possible Skaadom may endure.
